A report by think tanks Ember and Agora Energiewende showed that in 2020, the main source of energy for the European Union was renewable for the first time ever.

The report showed that renewable energy including wind and solar-generated power contributed to 38% of the 27 member-state energy use, while fossil fuels contributed 37%.

The report said “Coal generation fell in almost every country, continuing coal’s collapse that was well in place before Covid-19,”

Dave Jones, Ember’s senior electricity analyst, said “Renewables will keep rising because we keep installing more and more. The jury’s out as to whether fossil fuels will rebound but if they do rebound it’s not expected to be by a lot,”
