The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is eyeing an expansion of the Pasig River Ferry Service, driven by the increasing demand from commuters. MMDA Chairman Atty. Romando Artes revealed that three new 150-seater ferries are currently in the process of being registered with the Maritime Industry Authority (Marina) for deployment. The demand for the service is evident, with all ferry trips consistently full and some commuters unable to board due to capacity limitations.
From January to November 2023, the ferry service experienced a 56% increase in ridership compared to the same period last year, indicating a growing preference for this mode of transportation. In response, the MMDA plans to purchase additional boats next year to accommodate the rising number of passengers who find the service convenient, fast, and free from traffic congestion.
The ferry service currently operates through 13 stations, including Pinagbuhatan, San Joaquin, Maybunga, and others. The MMDA is also focusing on completing repair works on these stations, with plans for further expansion and improvements in the coming year. This includes repairs to a terminal in Binondo affected by bridge construction and enhancements to stations in Pasig and Marikina.
