Ford is set to restructure its workforce at the Michigan factory responsible for the F-150 Lightning, with approximately 1,400 employees facing job transfers or retirement options. This decision follows the automotive giant’s announcement in January, reflecting a slowdown in sales of the electric pickup truck. The transition, effective next week, aligns with Ford’s adjustment to the electric vehicle (EV) market dynamics, where growth has not met industry expectations, prompting a shift toward hybrid models.
Despite a 55% sales increase for the Lightning in the past year, the market’s demand has not sustained momentum, leading to an inventory build-up. Ford’s strategy includes relocating 700 workers to its Michigan Assembly Plant to support the production of the Bronco and Ranger models, while the rest will choose between retirement packages or reassignments within southeast Michigan.
Ford’s move indicates a broader industry trend of recalibrating workforce and production strategies in response to fluctuating EV market demand. The company remains committed to retaining its workforce, ensuring continued employment for those not opting for retirement, and reinforcing its operational flexibility in adapting to market shifts.
