France Backs PH-EU Free Trade Deal Amid Global Tariff Shifts

France is advocating for a free trade agreement (FTA) between the Philippines and the European Union as a strategic move to deepen cross-border trade and investment, especially in light of U.S. tariff reforms under President Donald Trump.

French Minister Delegate for Foreign Trade Laurent Saint-Martin, during his visit to Manila, emphasized France’s support for stronger PH-EU economic ties. “We believe in cross-trade and cross-investment. This FTA is the best path to boost our trade relations,” he said.

France currently ranks as the Philippines’ third-largest EU trading partner. Philippine exports to France and other EU nations include semiconductors, coconut oil, machinery, transport equipment, and processed foods like canned tuna.

With the U.S. remaining the Philippines’ top export destination—accounting for 16.6% of total exports—economists like Michael Ricafort stress the need for the country to diversify its trade portfolio to reduce dependence on the American market.

Saint-Martin noted the potential for expanded trade in both directions, depending on sectoral demand and conditions outlined in the FTA. He also expressed France’s interest in joining the Luzon Economic Corridor (LEC), a major infrastructure initiative connecting Subic Bay, Clark, Metro Manila, and Batangas.

During a courtesy meeting with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., both leaders affirmed the countries’ shared commitment to international law and cooperation in areas like air services, defense, culture, film, and development.
