As we close out the year, we are pleased to shine the spotlight on who else but one of our entrepreneurial negosyantes leading the pack in the country. Today’s Next Negosyante is none other than Gabriel Esguerra, founder of both R.M. Gallagher, an online vintage luxury watch boutique, and SmartAge Solutions, a company specializing in smart home and smart glass technology. I had the opportunity to digitally chat with Gabriel and pick his brain, extracting what nuggets of wisdom I could.
What made you choose the various industries you’re currently in?
G: One word: Passion. All my ventures are built from a genuine obsession towards the things that give fire to my soul. I am a person who responds to fire, to heat. I would not do anything that doesn’t set my spirit on fire.
How do you juggle, as an entrepreneur, several ventures?
G: First of all, I feel I would do a grave injustice to my partner and my team if I wouldn’t straightforwardly recognize how important they are in the work that I do. The principle I wish to zero in on is this: to choose a business partner who can fill in the gaps of your weaknesses and draw out the very best from within you.
Having said that, I am truly blessed to have my girlfriend and co-founder of SmartAge Solutions, Meecan Dela Cruz, by my side who does exactly that. As for juggling my many responsibilities, two additional principles come to mind: to have a team you can trust and to train your mind-body-spirit to always be at peak state.
All my ventures are built from a genuine obsession towards the things that give fire to my soul.
Do you use any tools, mental frameworks, or applications to increase either efficiency or productivity?
G: In order to be most efficient and productive, I have to be at my peak state. In order to get there, it is important to be disciplined in my routines and habits. These are the non-negotiables that help me get to my peak state:
1. Have a daily schedule properly laid out.
2. Sleep early. I make sure to sleep between 10pm-2am. Circadian rhythm is everything.
3. Wake up early. Feel energized and fresh after a night of deep sleep.
4. Fix bed. The act of fixing my bed sets the rhythm and flow of my day by allowing me to start off by being productive.
5. Stretch. Let your blood and energy flow!
6. Meditate. Helps me in attaining mindfulness.
7. Workout. Gives me my daily kick of endorphins!
8. Mental priming and my daily affirmations to set my spirit in a positive state.
9. Cold shower. The shock it gives my body makes me feel alive!
10. Follow schedule. This eliminates the distractions that derail me from my daily goals. It also helps to face problems immediately as they come. Never procrastinate or neglect the essential things because they will pile up and eventually become too overwhelming to handle. It is best to always be prepared for the new challenges that come your way.
How do you plan on growing your businesses further in 2021?
G: At R.M. Gallagher, besides continuing to curate quality pieces for our valued clients, we intend to come out with more engaging curated video content to further nurture people’s love for vintage watches.
At SmartAge Solutions, we will be growing our team, expanding our sales and marketing channels, and building more partnerships. It’s a year of exponential growth and unleashing our fullest potential.
Are there any new ventures in sight? What opportunities lie ahead for you?
G: Not exactly a new venture but an expanded vision for SmartAge Solutions. We envision our technologies to eventually expand to smart city applications, where everything from the home integrates into a larger ecosystem. Right now, all my focus is on growing SmartAge Solutions. We have a grand vision for the company and a lot of work has to be done to materialize it. Countless of opportunities have come our way in 2020 and these opportunities will keep us busy for now. 2021, however, will be a year of much larger possibilities!
I have an unquenchable desire for self-mastery
What is your “secret sauce”?
G: Having a growth mindset is my secret sauce. I guess it’s my overall mindset towards life. I have always wanted to grow and learn, and find better ways to do things. I have an unquenchable desire for self-mastery — a deep understanding that it isn’t what I get out of my businesses but who I become through the journey of building them that is truly most important.
