Galunggong Prices Set to Drop as Palawan’s Fishing Ban Concludes, Says BFAR

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has brought positive news to the consumers, forecasting a decrease in the prices of galunggong (round scad) following the lifting of the closed fishing season in Palawan. This development is expected to enhance the supply of the popular fish in the market, making it more accessible to the public.

During a recent public interview on Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon, BFAR spokesperson Nazario Briguera elaborated on the situation. He mentioned that the fishing grounds in Palawan were reopened on Thursday after a three-month hiatus, a conservation measure aimed at preserving and replenishing marine life.

Briguera optimistically stated, “In the next few weeks, we will increase the unloading of galunggong in our market.” He further added that with the improvement in the supply of locally produced galunggong, a subsequent decrease in its market price is anticipated, providing relief to consumers who have been facing high prices for this staple fish.

The closed fishing season, which is a strategic measure to prevent overfishing and promote sustainable fishing practices, began on November 1, 2023, for galunggong in Palawan. Similar bans were enforced in the Visayan Sea and off the Zamboanga Peninsula for sardines, herring, mackerel, and other fish species from November 15, 2023, to February 15, 2024.

In response to the temporary supply constraints during the closed season, the government had previously planned to import approximately 35,000 metric tons of various fish species, including galunggong, mackerel, bonito, and moonfish, to stabilize the market. However, with the reopening of the fishing grounds, the need for such large-scale importation is expected to diminish, allowing local fishers to regain their livelihoods and consumers to enjoy more affordable prices.

This proactive approach by BFAR and the government reflects a balanced strategy of conservation and market stabilization, ensuring the sustainability of marine resources while also addressing the immediate needs of the populace.
