Globe Telecom Inc. has transitioned more facilities in Luzon and Visayas to use renewable energy, in line with its goal to reduce its carbon emissions to net zero by 2050.
The telco said it added operating sites in Cavite, Cebu, Laguna, and Metro Manila, with 24 facilities using clean power.
Aside from The Globe Tower in Taguig City, it uses green power for other facilities in Quezon City, Cavite, Cebu, Makati City, Batangas, Mandaluyong City, Manila City, Marikina City, San Juan City, and Tarlac.
In 2019, Globe started procuring renewable energy bundled with carbon offsets through power purchasing agreements.
Globe used the resources of Ayala Group’s energy unit ACEN Crop. to shift as many facilities to clean energy, especially those that use high power levels.
Globe said its shift used the Green Energy Option (GEO) program by the Department of Energy that offered consumers a monthly average peak demand of 100 kilowatts per hour, with the option to engage directly with renewable energy suppliers.
As part of the Ayala Group, Globe wants to decrease its carbon footprint to reach net zero by 2050.
In 2021, Ayala Corp. committed to attaining net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, aligning its business strategies with the Paris Agreement that aims to limit global warming.
Rizza Maniego-Eala, chief finance and risk officer at Globe, said the company continues to upgrade its facilities to renewable sources and sustain efforts to minimize its carbon emissions.
“This shift to renewable energy is part of Globe’s overall climate action roadmap and in support of both the country and the Ayala Group’s goal to reduce carbon emissions. We are continuously shifting our high energy utilization facilities to renewable energy sources and we are looking forward to enrolling more eligible facilities as we proactively address climate-related risks,” Eala said.
