Globe Pilots Laser Communications in Bulacan for Fiber-Like Connectivity

Globe Telecom, in partnership with Asticom Technology Inc., has launched a pilot test of a laser communications system in Bulacan, utilizing technology from Singapore-based Transcelestial Technologies Pte. Ltd. The system, which aims to deliver “fiber-like connectivity,” offers a cost-effective and rapid alternative to traditional fiber optics, enhancing 4G and 5G coverage.

The pilot used Transcelestial’s CENTAURI device to create an invisible laser link between buildings and Globe’s mobile solutions, such as the Cell Site on Wheels (COW), during a demonstration at the Philippine Arena. Joel Agustin, Globe’s head of Service Planning and Engineering, highlighted the potential of laser communications in areas where deploying traditional infrastructure is challenging.

“This collaboration is a prime example of how the telecom industry is evolving,” said Transcelestial CTO Mohammad Danesh, emphasizing the industry’s shift toward scalable, high-speed connectivity solutions. Globe verified the system’s efficiency through network metrics and incident data gathered during the test.

Globe targets to increase revenue by mid-single-digit levels in 2024, building on its record-high P162.3 billion in revenue from 2023.
