Group: Employees Have ‘Right to Refuse’ Work in Dangerous Situations

As Severe Tropical Storm Kristine impacts Luzon, a labor group has reminded employers that workers have the “right to refuse” work when facing imminent danger. The Federation of Freedom Workers (FFW) emphasized on Thursday that under the Occupational Safety and Health Law and Labor Advisory No. 17, Series of 2022, employees cannot be penalized for not reporting to work due to hazards caused by calamities.

The FFW called on employers to prioritize safety, suggesting that companies may also provide additional incentives to employees who choose to work during extreme weather or risky conditions.

“We encourage all employers to promote a safe working environment and ensure that workers can make safety-driven decisions without fear of repercussions,” the FFW stated.

Malacañang has suspended government work and classes across Luzon since October 23, as 16 areas remain under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 3, according to PAGASA.
