Holy Week 2024 Sees Surge in Fish Prices

As Holy Week 2024 approaches, a notable rise in fish prices has been observed, correlating with the increased demand typical of this season. During Lent, especially on Ash Wednesday and Fridays, many Catholics opt for fish over meat as a form of penance, leading to a surge in fish consumption.

Details of the Price Hike

  • Price Fluctuations: The Department of Agriculture (DA) reports that the cost of bangus (milkfish) escalated from PHP 140 to PHP 250 per kilogram, stabilizing at PHP 150 to PHP 220. Meanwhile, local galunggong (round scad) saw an increase from PHP 180 to PHP 280, eventually reaching PHP 300 per kilogram.
  • Predicted Increases: Assistant Secretary Arnel De Mesa of the DA anticipates further price hikes of 10% to 20% from Maundy Thursday to Black Saturday, underscoring the seasonal demand’s impact.

Despite the price escalation, the DA has ruled out setting a price ceiling for fish or any other commodity, including pork. On the ground, fish retailers, like Marivic dela Cruz in Malabon City, attribute the price adjustments to middlemen rather than direct market manipulation by sellers.

This annual trend underscores the economic dynamics of supply and demand during religious observances, impacting both consumers and retailers in the fish market.
