Inflation Pushed More Filipinos To Spend On Mobile Services

Independent analytics company OpenSignal shared in a study that mobile users are likely to prioritize having reliable and “good enough” mobile services over subscribing to the best and most expensive products as consumer prices increase.

Infrawatch PH convener Terry Ridon affirms how observed consumer behavior was caused by rising inflation here in the Philippines, justifying that the “popularity of mobile promos validates this view.”

“In such times, consumers often cut back on luxuries and focus on the essentials,” OpenSignal said. Inflation in the Philippines alone reached 8% in November compared to the 7.7% rate in October.

“For mobile, this means some users may focus more on ensuring they have a good enough and consistent experience, rather than caring as much about having the fastest or the very best mobile experience,” OpenSignal said.

Ridon said local telcos limited talk time as a tradeoff but “this is good enough for a vast majority of users.”

In fact, prepaid accounts “approximate the most important services of telcos without lock-in periods and a monthly price commitment,” he added.
