In an effort to lessen abusive messages online, Instagram recently announced a new feature on its platform called the “Limits.” Once switched on, it will allow users to automatically hide comments and direct messages from people who are not among their followers — or have just started following them.
The feature was introduced to curb abuse from a large number of people “who simply pile on in the moment” and protect them from “a sudden rush” of negative attention, explained Instagram.
This move came after various sporting events and instances when content creators or public figures go viral. One specific instance that the platform cited was when England lost during Euro 2020 football final and racist remarks were hurled at black players.
“Limits” stands as an alternative for users instead of completely disabling comments and messages to avoid unwanted/unwarranted interactions. It will effectively mute anyone who has not been a “long-standing follower” of a particular person.
Alongside “Limits,” Instagram has also launched its “Hidden Words” system worldwide to automatically filter out abusive language. This can be customized by users identifying which words they would want to block. Repeat offenders of this feature will have their accounts deleted by the platform.
