The first-ever tweet from Twitter co-founder, Jack Dorsey, has been immortalized as an NFT and is currently being offered for $48 million on OpenSea. Sina Estavi, the CEO of Malaysian blockchain service, Bride Oracle, announced that he put the tweet’s NFT up for sale for 14,969 Ether after paying $2.9 million for it last year. The token feature’s Dorsey’s inaugural tweet wherein he typed, “just setting up my twittr.”

“I think years later people will realize the true value of this tweet, like the Mona Lisa painting,” he tweeted around the time he bought it.

Following the sale’s announcement, Estavi promised to donate 50% of the proceeds to the charity, GiveDirectly, which gives out cash to those who live in poverty.

Upon seeing Estavi’s Twitter announcement, Dorsey replied, “why not 99% of it?” as a response to the token’s owner and GiveDirectly founder Elon Musk.

“I don’t want the rest for myself; I’d prefer to use the rest to support blockchain projects (@bridge_oracle) and help my people, but your suggestion is valuable to me. If you like, I would donate 100% of it to charity if you let me know,” Estavi tweeted on Thursday.

According to CoinMarketCap, the tokens price tag puts its value on par with artworks by famous artists like Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh. An impressive feat considering it is essentially an image of a tweet with a verified account.

Picasso’s Femme au béret et à la robe quadrillée sold for $68.7 million at the auction house Sotheby’s in 2018, and van Gogh’s L’Allée des Alyscamps sold for $72.4 million in 2015.

Following Elon Musks’ announcement where he took a 9.2% in Twitter, the company’s stock rallied 27% last Monday. A day after, Twitter appointed him to its board of directors as Dorsey stepped down as CEO last November.
