Liverpool F.C. Announces NFT Collection in Partnership with Sotheby’s

On Thursday, prominent English Premier League team Liverpool F.C. announced that it will be dropping a collection of NFTs following its partnership with Sotheby’s Metaverse. The “LFC Heroes Club” will feature each of the football club’s 24 players, which is the team’s attempt of providing an “innovative way to celebrate being an LFC fan from anywhere in the world.”

The NFT collection is split into two categories, namely the “Hero” tokens and “Legendary” tokens. Hero NFTs will have Match Mode, Fresh Mode, and Super Mode features starting at $75 for each piece — keeping it accessible for the team’s fan base. On the other hand, Legendary NFTs will be one-of-one editions, which are set to be auctioned off on March 30.

Half of the proceeds generated from the sale of Liverpool’s Legendary NFTs will benefit the LFC Foundation and its community. Moreover, the foundation will also receive 10% from the sale of Hero NFTs as well as 10% of all future resale royalties. According to the team, the NFT collection will be minted on the Polygon blockchain.

This partnership also marks the expansion of Sotheby’s Web3 arm after it reported reaching more than $1o0 million in NFT sales over the past year. The auction house is determined to increase its NFT sales for 2022 as it continues to seek more partnerships with new organizations instead of hosting traditional art-style auctions of high-profile collections such as CryptoPunks and the Bored Ape Yacht Club.

“Prior to this project, [Sotheby’s Metaverse] has been focused mainly on crypto-native art. But we can see this project driving into sports, we can also see this in entertainment, fashion, and music in the future,” explained Sebastian Fahey, managing director of Sotheby’s. Currently, the fantasy sports NFT marketplace Sorare — valued at over $4 billion — leads in worldwide football-related partnerships, already having engagements in place with teams from the top leagues of Italy, Germany, and England.
