After a prolonged wait of 22 years, 145 former employees of the Intercontinental Broadcasting Corporation (IBC-13) have at last received their retirement pay, marking a significant resolution to a decades-long struggle. The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) announced this development, highlighting a moment of closure and relief for the retirees and their families.
The story of these IBC-13 employees is one of patience and perseverance. Having served the state-run media firm, these individuals had to navigate through the tenure of 28 different management teams over more than two decades before their retirement benefits, totaling P500 million, were finally disbursed. This delay underscores significant systemic issues within the corporation and perhaps broader governmental mechanisms dealing with employee benefits.
Tragically, at least 25 of the retirees passed away before they could receive the retirement pay they had earned, a stark reminder of the real human cost associated with administrative delay and oversight. For those who survived, many currently face health challenges, with some described as “gravely ill,” according to IBC-13 president and CEO Jimmie Policarpio.
The release of these long-awaited funds followed direct instructions from the President, who emphasized the importance of addressing the welfare of media workers—a commitment echoed by the PCO. Secretary Cheloy Garafil expressed honor in facilitating the resolution of these claims, emphasizing that ensuring the welfare of media workers remains a cornerstone of the current administration.
According to Policarpio, the disbursal of the retirement pay benefits around 200 families, providing them not only financial relief but also a sense of dignity and acknowledgment for the years of service these employees dedicated to their profession. The management’s statement highlighted a sense of thanksgiving among the retirees, who can now look forward to enjoying their remaining years with dignity and pride.
IBC-13, along with Peoples Television Network and the Presidential Broadcast Service-Bureau of Broadcast Services, comprises the media arm of the PCO. This group’s role in disseminating information and supporting the government’s communication needs makes the resolution of such longstanding issues particularly significant, reflecting on the government’s handling of internal affairs and its impact on public perception.
