A recent analysis by the NewClimate Institute and Carbon Market Watch has cast a spotlight on the inadequacies of climate commitments made by 51 multinational corporations. These companies, spanning industries from automotive to fast fashion, like H&M Group, Nestle, and Toyota, are not curbing their greenhouse gas emissions quickly enough to contribute effectively to the global effort against climate change.
The report underscores a significant challenge: differentiating between genuine reductions in emissions and superficial “greenwashing.” With these firms accounting for 16% of worldwide emissions in 2022, their collective efforts are deemed “critically insufficient” to maintain global temperature increases within the 1.5 degrees Celsius threshold established by the Paris climate agreement.
Although there has been a slight improvement in the collective ambition of these companies’ climate pledges over the past two years, they remain substantially behind the necessary economy-wide emission reductions. To meet the Paris agreement objectives, a 43% cut in global emissions is required by 2030, yet the companies assessed are only on track to achieve a 33% reduction under their current commitments.
The report also criticizes the growing trend of using carbon credits for meeting climate targets, a practice seen as allowing continued pollution under the guise of offsetting. This “creative accounting” is increasingly being challenged, with experts advocating for stringent regulations and policy changes rather than voluntary corporate pledges.
Despite the grim overview, some companies like Danone, Enel, and Iberdrola are making strides, particularly in renewable energy investments and reducing specific emissions. However, the report highlights the need for more aggressive action across the board and a shift towards business models that prioritize sustainability over production volume.
In conclusion, the report advocates for stronger governmental regulations to ensure that corporate actions align with the urgent need for significant climate change mitigation.
