Philippine-based pattern tester and crochet artist Ros shares the art of yarn weaving through mental wellness, creativity, and fashion with Unicorn Yarn Crafts.

More than just a hobby, crocheting has become a way of life for many individuals. For some, it is a coping mechanism that has helped them through challenging times. For others, it is a form of self-expression, an art that allows them to create unique and one-of-a-kind pieces.

For Ros, crocheting has been a lifelong passion. She recalls her first experience with crocheting, where she would help her grandmother make “lampin” or cloth diapers for newborns in the family. From there, her interest grew, and she began creating small projects like pencil cases for school.

Coming from the COVID-19 pandemic, crocheting became a coping mechanism for Ros. It helped her ground herself and served as a mindful exercise to be present. She began making more intricate pieces she wanted to share her creations with others through social media and decided to turn them into a small business.

“Aside from the mental and emotional benefits, crocheting has also helped me develop practical skills. I’ve learned how to measure, attach, and create different designs, which has helped me to value my labor and my craft more.”

What sets her crocheting apart is that she prefers to work with a certain number of clients with specific visions rather than mass-producing her pieces.

“One of the things I love most about crocheting is that I work more with specific clients with specific visions, instead of mass-producing. This engagement helps me become more sustainable, and I get to know my clients better. For example, a client once asked me to make a specific type of earring for his significant other with a certain symbol and color. We worked together to conceptualize what the earrings would look like, and I was able to create something truly unique for them.”

For Ros, crocheting is not just a hobby or a coping mechanism. It is a way to contribute to the lives of others, to be a part of their story. 

“Crocheting has provided me with a creative outlet, practical skills, and a way to connect with others.”
