It often comes as a surprise to Kim’s new customers when they hear of her graduating from an Architecture school and even previously working in an Architectural firm, to find her making reels and posting on Instagram about the jewelry her shop currently sells.
Pulseras by Kim had its small beginnings from Kim being an Architectural student, working on her thesis, and looking for a way to release stress.
“I was working so much virtually on my laptop, that I wanted to take a break and work with my hands to create something tangible and physical instead! So I started to make those friendship bracelet-type pieces and “sold” them to my friends at cost! From there it just evolved with the times and my sense of style to more minimalist pieces, and I’ve been making jewelry ever since!” shares Kim.
Pulseras by Kim’s founder, Kim Tiam-lee, continued making jewelry despite her working a full-time job. Then suddenly, her mother passed away in late 2015. Kim says “it made me realize how short life truly is and pushed me to pursue this as more than just a passion project”
From barely getting enough sleep to quitting her job at the firm and taking a risk by going full-time with her small business, she took a gamble and built a brick & mortar shop.
“It was scary, and financially draining because you need a bigger capital and the stakes are higher for when it fails.. but I was lucky that we were able to slowly build a team who equally shared in the passion of creating jewelry and helping our clients.”
From this point on, Pulseras by Kim has grown to over 70,000 followers on Instagram and has sold thousands of pieces nationwide and abroad.
“I really really admire brands that are polished with a strong marketing strategy, solid branding, and with 100k++ followers but we prefer starting slow, growing with our clients, and troubleshooting, improving, and changing along the way!”
From this strategy, Kim and her sister even recently began a fine jewelry brand called Love, Susie which was inspired by their mother. It was their mother who brought Kim and her sister to Christmas bazaars and gave them pieces of jewelry to celebrate special occasions like birthdays and graduations. It was from here that cultivated her love for jewelry and design.
Pulseras by Kim tries to encapsulate moments and memories through jewelry by having pieces ready for engraving dates, special names, QR codes, and even photos. Her goal of memories turned into jewelry continues even in pop-up shops and her main shop which does on-the-spot engraving, and customizing for each customer’s needs.
With her years of personal experience and experimentation, she made sure her pieces at Pulseras by Kim lasted longer and are of high-quality material by making gold-filled jewelry that would outlast the alloy pieces that turn green or black which are typically used by fast fashion companies.
Pulseras by Kim offers minimalist long-lasting gold-filled jewelry at wallet-friendly prices while her Love, Susie line customizes and sells more expensive jewelry with gemstones and real gold and silver.
Both shops are found on Instagram and their physical store is located at 995 Edsa, Quezon City with store hours of Tuesday – Saturday 10 AM – 5P M.
