A mobile treatment plant (MTP) has been deployed by the Manila Water Company (MWC) in Siargao in an effort to make potable water more accessible for the communities that were devastated by super typhoon Odette just last month and are still trying to recover from the natural calamity.
According to MWC, their MTP can treat and convert any type of raw water such as river water or saltwater into potable water. It will also allow communities to produce 1,500 to 3,000 liters of potable water per hour. Additionally, MWC has also provided two water tankers to various areas of Siargao. These water tankers have the capacity to deliver 10,000 liters of water per trip.
Over 5,000 residents from 13 barangays of the province have received close to 23,000 liters of water which were distributed by volunteer-employees of Manila Water in the wake of the super typhoon. MWC hopes to continue its relief operations in Siargao, particularly in terms of addressing the water supply needs of the communities. It is currently engaging with government offices to deploy an additional MTP as well as a water tanker.
Manila Water, along with its various operating units across the country, has also extended assistance to communities in Cebu and Bohol that were also affected by super typhoon Odette since December. The company’s social arm, Manila Water Foundation, has likewise prepared 3,700 units of five gallons of bottled water and more than 300 hygiene kits which have been distributed to families in Cebu, Bohol, Siargao, Dinagat Island, Southern Leyte, and Palawan through local partners.
