Manila Water Wraps Up 2024 with Key Service Improvement Projects

Manila Water, the East Zone concessionaire, concluded 2024 with significant infrastructure developments aimed at improving water and wastewater services for its expanding customer base of over 7.76 million. These initiatives address water security, environmental sustainability, and service accessibility, particularly in geographically challenging areas in Rizal and Metro Manila.

Notable Completed Projects

Water Supply Enhancements

  1. East Bay Water Supply System Phase 1
    • 50 MLD capacity, serving 390,000 customers in Jalajala, Pililla, Baras, Cardona, Morong, and Binangonan.
    • Includes two submarine pipes across Laguna Lake.
  2. Calawis Water Treatment Plant (WTP)
    • Fully tested with an 80 MLD capacity, benefitting 900,000 residents in Antipolo, Baras, and Teresa.
  3. Cardona WTP Maximization Program
    • Increased water conveyance capacity from 50 MLD to 110 MLD.
  4. Binangonan Pumping Station and Reservoir
    • A key component of East Bay Phase 1, aiding the distribution of treated water to service areas.
  5. Antipolo Transmission Line Project
    • 9 km steel pipeline installation to improve water supply for 1 million customers in Antipolo, Teresa, Baras, Taytay, and Angono.
  6. Darangan Bridge Pipelaying Project
    • Improved water access for 20,000 households in Angono, Binangonan, Cainta, Taytay, and Pasig City.

Wastewater Management Upgrades

  1. East Avenue Sewage Treatment Plant (STP)
    • Transitioned to the Modified Ludzack-Ettinger (MLE) process for advanced nutrient removal.
  2. Kalayaan Sewer Replacement Projects
    • Upgraded old concrete sewer lines to PVC pipes in Quezon City, improving service to households and establishments.
  3. Marikina North STP Maintenance
    • Enhanced capacity with new pumps, pipes, and system upgrades for efficient wastewater treatment.

Future Projects (Completion in 2025 and Beyond)

  1. East Bay Phase 2 WTP
    • 200 MLD facility to serve 2.08 million residents in Metro Manila and Rizal.
  2. Kaysakat WTP Project
    • 48% complete, targeting January 2026. Will add 220 MLD potable water supply.
  3. Aglipay STP Project
    • 60 MLD capacity, set to improve water quality and sanitation for 652,000 residents in Mandaluyong, San Juan, and Quezon City.
  4. Pinugay Septage Treatment Plant (SpTP)
    • 50 cubic meter capacity, offering sanitation services for 150,000 residents in Rizal.

Jeric Sevilla, Manila Water’s Communication Affairs Group Director, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to enhancing water and wastewater services, citing ongoing investments to meet customer needs while supporting environmental sustainability and regulatory compliance.
