In a strategic move to bolster the agricultural sector and enhance economic development, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. announced on Thursday that his administration is focused on transforming Northern Mindanao into the leading agricultural hub of the Philippines. This initiative is part of a broader vision to make Region 10 globally competitive and a significant center for industry, tourism, and trade.
During a ceremony in Iligan City, where presidential assistance was distributed to local farmers, fisherfolk, and families, President Marcos outlined the Northern Mindanao Regional Development Plan for 2023 to 2028. This plan, spearheaded by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), encompasses a series of strategic projects and initiatives aimed at elevating the region’s economic landscape.
“Hangad po nito na gawing ‘globally competitive’ at ‘leading agricultural hub,’ ‘major industrial, tourism, trade center’ ang buong Region 10,” Marcos stated. (This aims to make Region 10 globally competitive and a leading agricultural hub.)
Several high-impact infrastructure projects are at the core of this development strategy. Among them is the construction of the Panguil Bay Bridge, which will connect Tangub in Misamis Occidental with Tubod in Lanao del Norte. This bridge is expected to significantly enhance regional connectivity and economic integration.
Additionally, there are planned expansions, rehabilitations, and development projects for key airports in the region, including those in Ozamiz, Camiguin, Lumbia, Bukidnon, and Laguindingan. These improvements are anticipated to streamline transportation, facilitate trade, and boost tourism.
“Ang mga proyektong ito ay naglalayong mapabilis ang daloy ng ekonomiya at oportunidad para sa mga mamamayan ng Region 10,” Marcos emphasized. (These projects aim to develop the economy and opportunities for the residents in the region.)
The comprehensive approach to development also includes substantial financial assistance to enhance the livelihoods of local communities. Select beneficiaries from Iligan City, Lanao del Norte, and Misamis Occidental received financial aid of PHP 10,000 each. Furthermore, the local government of Iligan City was allocated PHP 10.5 million in presidential assistance, with Lanao del Norte and Misamis Occidental receiving PHP 13.9 million and PHP 24.3 million, respectively.
By focusing on Northern Mindanao, the Marcos administration aims to harness the region’s agricultural potential, leveraging its rich natural resources and strategic location. The development plan includes modernizing agricultural practices, improving supply chain logistics, and fostering innovation in agri-technology. These efforts are crucial for ensuring sustainable growth and enhancing the region’s competitiveness on a global scale.
President Marcos’s ambitious plan to transform Northern Mindanao into a leading agricultural hub is a testament to his administration’s commitment to regional development and economic diversification. By integrating infrastructure improvements with targeted financial support, the government aims to create a robust foundation for long-term growth and prosperity in Region 10.
