Marcos Backs ASEAN’s Diplomatic Response to U.S. Tariff Increases

KUALA LUMPUR — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has expressed support for ASEAN’s decision to respond to U.S. tariff hikes through dialogue and cooperation instead of retaliation.

Speaking at the ASEAN plenary, Marcos praised Malaysia’s leadership in organizing a special ASEAN Economic Ministers’ Meeting, where member states agreed to avoid retaliatory trade measures. He said ASEAN’s united and diplomatic stance affirms its commitment to a rules-based multilateral trading system.

Marcos noted that the new U.S. tariff schedule, including a 17% rate on Philippine goods, poses risks to regional supply chains and development. However, he emphasized the value of collective action in turning global uncertainties into opportunities.

The Philippines has held informal talks with ASEAN partners and met with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to explore ways to reinforce bilateral ties amid the policy shift.

ASEAN Economic Community Council chair Tengku Zafrul Aziz said the bloc chose diplomacy over escalation, stressing that open communication has preserved relationships with the U.S. and other key economies.
