Marcos Backs Solar-Powered Irrigation as Key to Sustainable Farming in Pangasinan

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. emphasized the role of solar-powered irrigation in modernizing agriculture during a visit to Pangasinan on Friday. He described it as a sustainable and cost-effective solution for boosting farm productivity.

Speaking at the groundbreaking of the Lower Agno River Irrigation System (LARIS) Paitan Dam in Santa Maria, Marcos highlighted that solar irrigation eliminates the need for fuel, drawing power directly from sunlight. The event also featured the turnover of farm machinery, inputs, and Solar Powered Irrigation Projects (SPIPs) to local farmers.

The LARIS project, under NIA Region I, aims to provide consistent irrigation to over 12,000 hectares of farmland across Pangasinan, Tarlac, and Nueva Ecija, benefiting thousands of farmers.

Marcos also led the groundbreaking of the Sky Garden Project in Alaminos, a green tourism initiative featuring elevated plant-filled walkways and community spaces. Designed to be accessible, especially for seniors, the project will support local tourism by hosting cafés, souvenir shops, and eco-tours. It is expected to benefit around 30 businesses and create 200 local jobs.

Marcos reiterated that such initiatives are essential not just for rural development, but also for empowering farmers, fisherfolk, and small entrepreneurs.
