Marcos Orders Probe Into Siquijor Electric Co-op as Power Crisis Escalates

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has ordered an investigation into the operations of the Siquijor Island Power Cooperative (SIPCOR) amid a worsening power crisis on the island.

Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Claire Castro confirmed that Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla and DOE officer-in-charge Sharon Garin have been summoned to address the ongoing electricity issues. Both short- and long-term solutions are being rolled out to stabilize the situation.

In response to the crisis, the Provincial Government of Siquijor has declared a state of calamity, enabling access to the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Fund (LDRRMF), specifically the Quick Response Fund (QRF), for urgent relief efforts.

Provincial Board Member Brylle Deeiah Tumarong-Quio said the decision followed a recommendation from the PDRRMC, citing prolonged blackouts due to the failure of multiple power generation units operated by SIPCOR. The outages have resulted in a critical power shortfall of approximately 2,250 kilowatts.

President Marcos is also keeping an eye on the situation at the San Juanico Bridge, which is undergoing rehabilitation. Authorities warn the bridge’s limitations could lead to monthly economic losses of up to ₱600 million, with around 14,000 vehicles crossing daily.
