President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. announced plans to establish seed production facilities in communities and universities across the Philippines to bolster food production and agricultural growth.
Speaking at the ceremonial turnover of Korea Partnership for Innovation of Agriculture (KOPIA) Greenhouses and Postharvest Facilities in Quezon, Marcos emphasized the initiative’s role in advancing the agricultural sector.
“Through these endeavors, no farmer, no family, no community will be left behind as we strive for a future where agriculture drives growth, nourishes our people, and sustains our nation,” Marcos said.
Collaborative Effort
The project will be spearheaded by the Department of Agriculture (DA) in collaboration with the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and state universities and colleges.
A New Chapter for Agriculture
Marcos described the initiative as opening a “new chapter” for Philippine agriculture, built on partnership, innovation, and the goal of achieving national food security.
He highlighted the role of the greenhouses and postharvest facilities in empowering small communities, enhancing their productivity, and integrating them into the regional value chain for exports.
Greenhouses Across Pilot Villages
Currently, 20 greenhouses have been set up in pilot locations, including Lucban in Quezon, Siniloan in Laguna, and Zaragoza in Nueva Ecija. These facilities focus on fresh vegetable and seedling production, supported by three postharvest facilities equipped with advanced machinery to reduce farmers’ workload and increase profitability.
“These greenhouses are hubs of fresh vegetable and seedling production, complemented by advanced machinery to reduce the burden of our farmers and increase profitability,” Marcos added.
