Marcos Seeks Singapore’s Support in Boosting PH Renewable Energy Sector

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is looking to strengthen ties with Singapore in a bid to expand the Philippines’ energy portfolio, particularly in renewable energy. Speaking during a joint press briefing with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Marcos underscored the importance of Singapore as a key investment partner.

“We view Singapore as a vital ally in our efforts to diversify energy sources,” Marcos said. “I encouraged increased investments from Singapore in our renewable energy sector, as part of our shared, future-oriented bilateral goals.”

He also noted that the Philippines remains a significant destination for Singaporean investments, adding that deeper collaboration between private sectors from both countries could further boost mutual economic growth.

Both leaders reiterated their commitment to tackling climate change by finalizing a carbon credit trading mechanism under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement. Marcos said they aim to swiftly complete negotiations to spur climate-friendly initiatives and attract green investments that benefit both countries.

“This cooperation will generate sustainable livelihood and business opportunities while supporting local communities with strong environmental outcomes,” he added.

Beyond energy, Marcos is eyeing broader cooperation in healthcare, including a formal agreement and joint training programs between health professionals.

He also highlighted the Digital Leadership Program, a partnership between the Civil Service Commission and the National University of Singapore, as a key step toward driving digital transformation in Philippine government services.

Prime Minister Wong’s official visit to the Philippines runs through June 5.
