MDPPA Launches “Tropang MAALAM” to Empower and Protect Filipina Riders

The Motorcycle Development Program Participants Association, Inc. (MDPPA)—representing major Japanese motorcycle brands in the Philippines—has launched a campaign specifically focused on the safety of Filipina riders.

Dubbed “Tropang MAALAM”, the initiative addresses unique challenges faced by women on the road, from aggressive drivers to unwanted attention and harassment. MDPPA emphasized that road safety for women requires more than the basics—it also involves protecting their personal space and promoting a culture of respect.

Key safety tips for female riders include:

  • Practicing full 360-degree awareness

  • Avoiding engagement with harassers at traffic stops

  • Staying confident and avoiding isolated areas when pulling over

The campaign also appeals to male riders, urging them to become allies on the road by:

  • Keeping a respectful distance

  • Avoiding unnecessary attention or aggressive riding

  • Asking before offering help

  • Calling out harassment when they see it

“Being a responsible rider means promoting a road culture that’s safe and inclusive,” the MDPPA said. They stressed that safety is a shared duty and that everyone plays a part in making roads secure for all, regardless of gender.

With Tropang MAALAM, the MDPPA aims to foster a riding community built on respect, vigilance, and mutual support.
