Meralco Partners with Korean Firms to Explore Nuclear Energy

Power distributor Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has expanded its efforts to explore nuclear power by partnering with several South Korean companies with expertise in nuclear technology and energy infrastructure.

The collaboration aims to study the possible use of nuclear energy in the Philippines as the country searches for reliable and cleaner sources of electricity. The partnership includes cooperation in areas such as nuclear technology development, feasibility studies, and potential deployment of advanced nuclear systems.

Among the organizations involved are South Korean energy and engineering groups with extensive experience in operating nuclear facilities, including firms connected to Korea Electric Power Corporation, one of the largest electric utilities in South Korea. The collaboration may also cover knowledge sharing, training programs, and technical studies for future nuclear projects.

As part of the initiative, Meralco is also strengthening its nuclear training programs by sending Filipino scholars to South Korea to study nuclear engineering and related fields. The program aims to build local expertise that could support the safe development and operation of nuclear power plants in the Philippines.

Energy experts believe nuclear power could help stabilize the country’s electricity supply and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Small modular reactors and other advanced nuclear technologies are among the options being studied as potential future energy sources.

Meralco officials said working with international partners will help the Philippines gain access to advanced knowledge and practical experience needed to responsibly develop nuclear energy.
