Mexico Condemns Trump’s Tariffs, Vows Retaliation

Mexico City – Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum strongly condemned U.S. President Donald Trump’s 25% tariffs on Mexican imports, calling them unjustified and harmful to both nations.

“There is no reason, rationale, or justification to support this decision that will affect our people and nations… Nobody wins with this decision,” Sheinbaum said in a press conference.

Mexico’s Planned Response

🔹 Retaliatory Tariffs: Sheinbaum will announce countermeasures, including new tariffs on U.S. goods, during a March 9 event at Mexico City’s Zócalo square.
🔹 Non-Tariff Actions: The government is also considering non-tariff measures to protect Mexico’s economy.
🔹 Security Cooperation: Sheinbaum highlighted Mexico’s recent efforts to crack down on fentanyl trafficking, a key issue Trump cited for imposing the tariffs.

Economic Impact

📉 The Mexican peso weakened, dropping 1% against the U.S. dollar following the tariff announcement.
📢 Mexican businesses warn of potential job losses and price increases if the trade war escalates.

Sheinbaum emphasized Mexico’s commitment to diplomatic negotiations, but made it clear that her government will not back down from defending its economy.
