The milk production of the Philippines is predicted to increase to a new record high of more than 30 million liters for this year, with the expanded domestic herd and increased productivity.

National Dairy Authority (NDA) Administrator Farrell Benjelix C. Magtoto mentioned that he is confident that the Philippines will hit the output mark of 30 million liters for the first time.

On the NDA’s numbers, the total milk production is estimated to reach 31.6 million liters which is a 20% increase compared to 26.3 million liters in 2021.

“We have been exhibiting a good performance in terms of milk production despite the fact that we are still recovering from the pandemic,”  mentioned Administrator Magtoto.

The dairy output of the Philippines hit 23.37 million liters from January to September of this year, which is a fifth higher than the 26.3 million liters noted in the same period of 2021 according to government data.

Administrator Magtoto linked the growth rate to increased milk productivity per cow, expanding the domestic dairy herd, and a “better business mindset” of farmers.

He also mentioned that the imported herds are already inseminated and are expected to give birth after arriving in the Philippines within four or three months. These cows are impregnated with slick genes that allow their offspring to have “heat-tolerant genes,” which would make them more adaptive to the climate of the country.

“With those genes, they will be more adaptive to the country’s climate and become more productive in producing milk.”
