International food and drink conglomerate, Nestle is aiming for a decarbonization strategy in the Philippines that would prompt bigger shifts to renewable energy installations, particularly for its Mindanao branches.

One of the biggest factories of Nestle Philippines is located in Cagayan de Oro City in Mindanao where they are eyeing a shift of their facility usage to renewable energy.

Mindanao’s energy grid is known to be where ‘king coal’ is mainly used in its supply. Nestle has been voicing its desire for a rebalancing of power generation development in the area.

Nestle Philippines Senior Vice President and Head of Corporate Affairs, Jose “Joey” Uy III has mentioned that they are looking into joining the increasing movement of  ‘woke corporates’  that advocate for the mitigation of climate change effects and risks.

According to him, “a crucial mission in reducing the world’s total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is to decarbonize the power sector by shifting to renewable electricity.”

He also added that with Nestle being a food and beverage company, “we protect nature because we depend on its gifts. This is why tackling climate change is a top priority for us with our net zero roadmaps focusing on sourcing responsibly, shaping a waste-free future, and transforming our operations.”

Nestle has also cited the Department of Energy (DOE) data which presents that 78.8% of the power supply of the country depends on fossil fuels while renewable energy only takes up 21.2%.

Nestle says that “a robust renewable energy (RE) sector can contribute significantly to mitigating climate change, achieving energy security, and attaining inclusive and sustainable energy growth in the Philippines.”
