NFT Game Pixelmon Becomes Center of Upset and Ridicule Following Its Launch

The NFT community was quick to express their dissatisfaction over social media following the launch of the new NFT game project Pixelmon for its in-game artwork which was poor in quality. Others took the opportunity to make fun of the project — as is the way on social media — generating memes of the terrible drop. This starkly contrasts their reception when the project was first teased, which had among the biggest launch sales to date swiftly selling out in less than a day.

Just earlier this month, Pixelmon was able to raise $70 million in funding after buyers paid a hefty amount of 3 ETH (approximately $9,200) per mint with the promise of it becoming “the largest and highest quality game the NFT space has ever seen.” It enticed the NFT community by assuring that it will expand its Pixelmon metaverse and integrate play-to-earn features, while also providing certain benefits for “Generation 1” Pixelmon holders.

Suffice it to say, the hype that was built around the project did not translate to the end product that was recently released. The backlash received by the project has prompted Pixelmon’s founder Syber to control the situation at hand. “I would like to apologize on behalf of myself and Pixelmon for everyone that has been affected by this. When we began this project, we were not thinking it would get as big as this,” explained Syber.

“The plan was always to use the funding raised from mint to create proper and better models — our NFTs are updatable and what they look like now is poor quality – we own up to that – they will be made better. We felt pressured to push reveal and the reality is we weren’t ready to push the artwork.”

At the moment, Pixelmon NFTs are being traded at 0.4 ETH (around $1,100) or lower on OpenSea. It has likewise been dubbed by some as “the worst NFT project ever,” but its founder is determined to turn this around. “The Pixelmon reveal was unacceptable. This is what our Pixelmon look like in-game. Our NFT art failed to reflect this. Despite the fud I will not go anywhere. The goal hasn’t changed. The funds will still be used to build our game. I will see this project through,” explained Syber over Twitter late last week.
