MANILA, Philippines – NLEX Corp., the toll operator of North Luzon Expressway (NLEX), is investing ₱1.4 billion in technology upgrades to enhance toll transactions and improve the overall experience for motorists.
Among the planned upgrades is the installation of Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) cameras across all 315 toll lanes. Currently, 77 lanes have this technology, which allows for barrierless transactions, vehicle tracking, and identification of RFID-less or underloaded accounts.
“By benchmarking its technologies against those used in other countries, we aim to provide greater accessibility and convenience to all motorists at NLEX, SCTEX, and NLEX Connector,” said Maria Theresa Wells, NLEX Corp.’s officer-in-charge and chief finance officer.
NLEX Corp. will also upgrade 127 RFID antennas to high-frequency models, improving readability and detecting vehicles three lanes ahead for faster processing. The goal is to achieve:
✅ 98% RFID readability rate
✅ Vehicle detection within one second
✅ Accurate vehicle classification
Additional improvements include:
🔹 More speed cameras for better traffic law enforcement
🔹 New toll lane computers for faster transactions
🔹 Upgraded Plaza Computer System (PCS) & Video Enhancement System (VES) servers
These enhancements will cover not only NLEX but also SCTEX (Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway) and the NLEX Connector, ensuring a smoother, safer, and more efficient toll experience.
