MANILA — Commuters can breathe a sigh of relief as the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) announced that there will be no fare hike this year, even as discussions of a possible fare increase for LRT-1 continue.
MRT-3 General Manager Oscar Bongon confirmed that the Department of Transportation (DOTr) has no plans to increase fares for the train system in 2025—and possibly for the next one to two years.
“As of now, there is no petition for an MRT-3 fare hike, and we are not obligated to adjust fares periodically like private concessionaires.”
Unlike LRT-1, which is operated by a private concessionaire and is required to periodically review fares, MRT-3 remains government-operated and is not bound by the same pricing policies.
Bongon also shared that MRT-3 will expand its train capacity by shifting from three-car to four-car train sets starting June 2025.
For now, MRT-3 commuters can expect stable fares and improved service as the rail system expands its capacity to accommodate more passengers.
