The Philippines and the United States have signed an agreement for a technical assistance grant valued at US$683,053 for the proposed implementation of an intelligent transportation system (ITS) in the Cebu metropolitan area.
The US Trade and Development Agency’s (USTDA) technical aid for the project will help identify the physical improvements and equipment required to enhance the core logistics in the area and conduct a comprehensive study of the implementation.
“The solutions to be assessed under this grant will not only relieve traffic congestion but also reduce vehicle emissions and energy consumption,” said Ms. Enoh Ebong, acting director of the USTDA.
The TA grant for the Metro Cebu ITS project will complement the Department of Transportation’s ongoing Cebu Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) Project, which is currently being financed by the Agence Francaise de Développement (AFD) and the World Bank (WB).
The technical assistance for the project is set to occur from April this year up to December 2022.
The BRT is expected to be partially running by the end of 2021.
Details of the ITS are available via the World Bank’s Toolkit for ITS for Urban transport.
