Philippine Farmers Advocate for Fair Rice Pricing Amid SRP Proposal

In response to the Philippine Agriculture Department’s proposal for a suggested retail price (SRP) on rice, the Federation of Free Farmers Cooperatives has urged for a reasonable, rather than overly low, SRP. The concern is that a low SRP, though not immediately impacting farmers, could have adverse effects in the subsequent harvest season. Raul Montemayor, National Manager of the Federation, expressed apprehension that traders might recoup their losses by purchasing palay at reduced prices, disadvantaging farmers.

The Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (SINAG) highlighted another perspective, focusing on how an SRP might influence rice importation. SINAG President Rosendo So noted the high global prices of rice, particularly from Vietnam and Thailand. He cautioned that a mandated SRP might deter importers if it doesn’t align with these high international costs. As a significant portion of rice in the market is imported, this could have broader implications.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) plans to implement the SRP to ensure affordable rice prices for consumers, intending to consult with stakeholders about this matter. However, as of the report, the DA hadn’t responded to the concerns raised by these agricultural groups.
