The Philippines’ water supply for the summer of 2024 is expected to be sufficient, despite the looming El Niño phenomenon, as stated by the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS). MWSS Division Manager Engineer Patrick Dizon assured that Angat Dam, which supplies water to Metro Manila and nearby provinces like Cavite, Rizal, and Bulacan, is well-prepared. The dam’s water level currently stands at 213.49 meters, higher than the target normal water elevation of 212 meters. Dizon asserted that the public could expect an adequate water supply during the summer.
However, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has expressed concerns about potential major problems with the water supply if the El Niño extends beyond the second quarter of 2024. Angat Dam, which fulfills approximately 90% of Metro Manila’s potable water requirement, can meet the demand until around May or June of 2024. DENR Undersecretary Carlos Primo David emphasized the need to preserve the dam at its maximum volume. If the El Niño event progresses or intensifies past June, it could pose a significant problem for Metro Manila’s water supply.
The MWSS, along with water concessionaires Maynilad and Manila Water, is confident that a repeat of the 2019 water crisis in Metro Manila is unlikely. Based on projections and simulations, the reservoir may dip to 180 meters, the minimum operating level, by June 2024. The current level of Angat Dam is 213.24 meters, slightly above its normal high water level, and measures are in place to source water from other locations if needed.
