PLDT-Smart Blocks 2 Billion Scam Texts in First 10 Months of 2024

PLDT Inc. and its wireless arm, Smart Communications Inc., blocked about 2 billion malicious text messages from reaching customers between January and October 2024 as part of an intensified effort to combat SMS fraud.

In the same period, the company blacklisted nearly 1 million mobile numbers tied to scams and other fraudulent activities.

October Highlights

Smart’s efforts in October alone resulted in:

  • Blocking over 200 million scam texts
  • Deactivating more than 46,000 mobile numbers used for fraudulent schemes.

“We urge our customers to be vigilant against text messages embedded with hyperlinks, as these often lead to phishing domains,” said Patrick Santos, PLDT-Smart’s chief information security officer.

Combating Advanced Scamming Tactics

PLDT-Smart reported ongoing investigations into fake cell towers, which scammers use to bypass telecom networks and deliver fraudulent messages directly to users. These messages often mimic legitimate sources, increasing the likelihood of victims falling prey.

To counteract these tactics, PLDT-Smart has enhanced its “HuliScam” anti-scam reporting portal by adding a location field where users can report areas frequently targeted by scam messages.

Tips to Spot and Avoid Scams

PLDT-Smart reminded customers to remember the acronym SCAM:

  • S – Suspicious: Avoid calls or messages from unverified numbers. Banks or telcos will never ask for OTPs or account details.
  • C – Clickbait: Be wary of offers or prizes that seem too good to be true.
  • A – Alarming: Scammers often create urgency or fear to pressure victims.
  • M – Malicious: Avoid links that lead to phishing websites.

Collaborative Efforts and Reporting

PLDT-Smart is collaborating with the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) to investigate, apprehend, and prosecute scammers.

Customers are encouraged to report suspicious messages through:

  • The HuliScam portal: https://smart.com.ph/huliscam
  • Smart’s verified social media pages:
    • Smart Communications on Facebook
    • @SmartCares on X
  • Smart hotline: *888

The company reiterated its commitment to protecting its subscribers from evolving cyber threats.
