Potential of Hydrogen Energy Pushed as DOE Partners with Japanese Company

The Department of Energy (DOE) recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Japanese firm Hydrogen Technology Inc. (HTI), it said on Thursday. This partnership hopes to bolster research and development on hydrogen as an alternative energy source for the country.

The DOE and HTI aim to “investigate hydrogen production in the Philippines to make the country energy independent and significantly reduce the country’s CO2 emissions,” as per the agreement.

“The DOE, with the creation of the Hydrogen and Fusion Energy Committee (HFEC), commits to exploring hydrogen as a viable alternative and cleaner source of energy and its other beneficial applications for the Filipino people,” said DOE Secretary Alfonso G. Cusi.

“With the assistance of HTI and through the signing of the MOU, we are hopeful that the development of hydrogen energy will eventually be realized,” Cusi added.

The chief of the DOE remains optimistic that the arrival of the Tokyo-based firm, along with their technology, to the Philippines can significantly push the country’s R&D initiative forward.

This continues the country’s path to finding more sustainable sources of energy as the DOE also signed a similar deal in January with Star Scientific Ltd., an Australian research and development company.
