Power Plants in Batanes Shut Down as Precaution Ahead of Super Typhoon Leon

In anticipation of Super Typhoon Leon, the Basco and Itbayat Diesel Power Plants (DPP) in Batanes have initiated a complete shutdown to safeguard equipment and minimize potential damage. The shutdown, which began Tuesday evening for Itbayat DPP and extended to Basco DPP on Wednesday, aims to protect electrical facilities from high winds and severe conditions, ensuring a quicker restoration process once the storm has passed.

The Basco DPP provides power across Batan Island, including the towns of Basco, Mahatao, Ivana, and Uyugan. The advisory from Basco DPP stated that power will only be restored when conditions are deemed safe.

As of the latest reports, Super Typhoon Leon, known internationally as Kong-rey, was located 360 kilometers east of Calayan, Cagayan, with sustained winds of 185 kph and gusts up to 230 kph, moving west-northwest at 10 kph.
