Metro Manila consumers will be able to buy rice at P45 per kilogram starting Monday, November 11. This price cap was reached after discussions between the Department of Agriculture (DA) and market association leaders in the National Capital Region.
The agreement stipulates that rice sellers will earn a modest P3 to P5 per kilo profit to keep prices low. “We hope to sustain this as a standard price for regular and well-milled rice,” said Agriculture spokesperson Arnel de Mesa.
Market sellers expressed cautious optimism. Javier Villena, representing Kamuning Market rice retailers, noted that while profits may be minimal, they will continue to support the program and balance earnings with other products.
The DA will monitor the implementation closely to prevent profiteering. The initiative may extend to other provinces, though rice prices could be impacted by recent typhoons. The DA also assured that pork supplies will be sufficient for the upcoming holiday season.
