Rising Vegetable Prices Challenge Consumers in Quezon City’s Mega Q Mart

At the Mega Q Mart in Quezon City, there has been a notable increase in the prices of several vegetables, as reported by Super Radyo dzBB. The cost of “Gulay Tagalog” has risen by P10, now priced at P80 per kilo. Significant hikes are observed in the prices of sitaw (string beans), eggplant, ampalaya (bitter gourd), and okra, with each showing a substantial increase from their previous prices. Garlic and siling labuyo (bird’s eye chili) have also seen price jumps, with the latter now costing P280 per kilo, a steep rise from its previous P200 per kilo rate.

Interestingly, the price of carrots has decreased, now being sold at P100 per kilo, half of its previous price. Other vegetables like tomatoes, potatoes, chayote (sayote), cabbage, cucumber, onion, green chili, and ginger, however, have maintained their prices.

This situation reflects the broader trend projected by the Department of Trade and Industry, which anticipated an increase in the prices of basic commodities including rice, canned sardines, instant noodles, and milk. The DTI noted that manufacturers of these and other products such as canned meat, coffee, bottled water, salt, and condiments have submitted petitions for price hikes.
