Samsung has announced that its latest flagship smartphone will have a wallet function that allows users to store digital documents and crypto. The Galaxy S22 Ultra will be able to store student IDs, driver’s licenses, and national ID cards in digital form, as well as digital keys for houses and cars keys. Additionally, the company states that this Digital ID feature can store debit and credit cards, boarding passes, and “access tickets.”
Samsung calls the wallet “a seamless, convenient and secure experience to make everyday life easier,” that “combines digital payment, ID, keys and asset management into one tool to simplify your routines, from showing your student ID to compiling travel documents before a flight.”
Recently, South Korean companies have worked on domestic solutions involving blockchain-powered wallets. These wallets will then provide users an all-encompassing drive to safeguard data and documents, as well as currency.
The company released a brief statement regarding its blockchain and crypto technology. They noted that its security platform “completely isolates sensitive data like your passwords, biometrics or blockchain keys from the phone’s main operating system.”
Samsung has showcased its new device and features at a Decentraland store named 837X after its initial unveiling in a Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. However, not all observers were impressed. An author from the media outlet Cnet states that the event “felt rushed and incomplete” and “served more as an example of what not to do when using the metaverse to host a product launch.”
The Cnet author concluded that the event was “a half-hearted attempt in a long line of cultural zeitgeist moments from Samsung.”
