San Jose del Monte LGU Seeks Realignment of MRT-7 Route to Address Community Concerns

City of San Jose del Monte (SJDM) in Bulacan Advocates for MRT-7 Route Adjustment

The local government unit (LGU) of San Jose del Monte (SJDM) in Bulacan is pushing for a realignment of the Metro Rail Transit Line 7 (MRT-7) route after comprehensive consultations with local stakeholders. This move aims to address concerns related to traffic congestion and potential disruption of essential services.

Community Concerns and Consultations

SJDM Mayor Arthur Robes announced that the decision to propose a route change stemmed from effective and inclusive discussions with community members and stakeholders. The primary concerns raised include potential traffic congestion, a decline in the quality of life, and disruptions in essential services due to the construction and operation of the MRT-7.

“Our city government consolidated various sentiments from our constituents and we immediately shared it in a meeting with Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista for their consideration,” Robes stated.

Potential Delays and Alternatives

In response to these consultations, Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista acknowledged the possibility of delays in the completion of the SJDM leg of the MRT-7. The delays are attributed to building owners and other stakeholders requesting the railway’s path to be diverted.

“They’re asking us if we can divert the station to another location,” Bautista explained.

Mayor Robes highlighted that the current proposed railway route follows Quirino Highway, a major thoroughfare frequented by many commuters traveling to and from Metro Manila. To mitigate potential issues, the SJDM LGU has proposed three alternative locations for the MRT-7 station within the city.

“We have also forwarded options where this essential project can push through while also ensuring that the general welfare of the people of San Jose del Monte is met,” Robes emphasized.

Collaborative Efforts and Future Steps

Although the SJDM LGU is not directly involved in negotiations concerning right of way issues, Mayor Robes expressed a commitment to collaborate with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and San Miguel Corporation (SMC) to expedite the project’s completion.

“We are looking forward to working with the Department of Transportation and San Miguel Corporation to fast-track the successful completion of this vital infrastructure project,” he added.

MRT-7 Project Overview

The MRT-7 project spans 22 kilometers and includes 14 stations: Quezon North Avenue Joint Station, Quezon Memorial Circle, University Avenue, Tandang Sora, Don Antonio, Batasan, Manggahan, Doña Carmen, Regalado, Mindanao Avenue, Quirino, Sacred Heart, Tala, and San Jose del Monte.

Secretary Bautista noted, “We’re looking at operating the Quezon City leg [of MRT-7] by the last quarter of 2025,” referring to the stations from North Avenue to Lagro. The first 12 stations are expected to be operational by December 2025. The Caloocan-Tala, 13th station, is slated to be operational a year later.

The North Avenue station will serve as an interchange with MRT-3 and Light Rail Transit Line 1 via the Unified Grand Central Station, enhancing connectivity across Metro Manila. Once fully operational, the MRT-7 is projected to serve approximately 800,000 passengers per day.

Conclusion: A Path Forward for MRT-7

The proposed realignment of the MRT-7 route by the SJDM LGU underscores the importance of addressing community concerns in large-scale infrastructure projects. By working collaboratively with the DOTr and SMC, the city aims to balance the benefits of improved transportation infrastructure with the need to maintain the quality of life for its residents.
