Sardine Makers Push for ₱3 Price Hike Due to Rising Tin Costs, Weak Peso

Manufacturers of canned sardines in the Philippines are requesting a ₱3 increase in the suggested retail price (SRP) of their products, citing higher costs of imported tin sheets and the continued depreciation of the peso.

Francisco Buencamino, executive director of the Canned Sardines Association of the Philippines, shared in a radio interview that they’ve formally asked the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to raise the SRP from ₱21 to ₱24.

According to Buencamino, the price of tinplate, a key packaging material for sardines, has spiked due to the peso’s weaker exchange rate against the US dollar, increasing production costs.

“If the price adjustment isn’t approved, some sardine brands might disappear from SRP shelves,” he warned. He added that consumers may still find sardines but at higher prices outside of the regulated price range.
