Scotland’s Lomond School to Accept Bitcoin for Tuition, Pioneering Digital Currency Use in UK Education

Lomond School in Scotland is set to make history by becoming the first educational institution in the UK to accept Bitcoin for tuition payments, starting with the Autumn 2025 term.

This innovative move places Lomond at the forefront of digital currency adoption in the education sector and reflects its commitment to preparing students for a financially uncertain future. The school announced the initiative as part of a broader educational mission to teach principles from the Austrian School of Economics, with Bitcoin serving as a real-world example of “sound money.”

“Bitcoin is democratic and inclusive, especially for those without access to traditional banking,” the school noted, adding that the cryptocurrency offers valuable lessons in economics, ethics, computing, and innovation.

Initially, tuition payments made in Bitcoin will be converted to fiat currency. However, the school has not ruled out the possibility of establishing a Bitcoin treasury fund depending on community feedback. At this stage, only Bitcoin will be accepted—no other cryptocurrencies.

Lomond joins a global wave of academic institutions embracing Bitcoin. U.S. universities like Cincinnati and Wyoming have launched crypto-focused programs, and El Salvador incorporated Bitcoin education into its national curriculum in 2023. The University of Austin also allocated part of its endowment to BTC investments in early 2025.

Meanwhile, Bitcoin adoption continues to grow at the state level in the U.S., with 41 Bitcoin reserve bills active across 26 states. Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Missouri are among the leaders pushing legislation to support digital assets.
