The SM Group in the Philippines, owned by the Sy family, is significantly expanding its foray into the grocery delivery sector. This move is being spearheaded through a collaboration between WalterMart Supermarkets and the logistics firm 2GO Group Inc., both under SM Group’s control. 2GO Group is set to become the primary logistics and delivery partner for WalterMart’s e-commerce business.
This strategic partnership aims to offer seamless grocery delivery services to 13 key cities in Metro Manila, including areas such as Caloocan, Malabon, Valenzuela, Quezon City, San Juan, Pasig, Makati, Taguig, Pasay, Las Piñas, Bicutan, Parañaque, Muntinlupa, and specific areas in Manila like Binondo, Tondo, San Andres, and Santa Ana.
Victor Paul Intal, WalterMart’s Assistant Vice President for Business Development, expressed confidence in the long-standing partnership with 2GO, emphasizing the commitment to maintain high-quality service standards in line with WalterMart’s reputation. Dennis Yaw, the business unit head of 2GO Retail, shared the sentiment, highlighting their objective to deliver daily essentials from stores directly to customers while ensuring product quality.
SM’s initiative to operationalize WalterMart’s grocery delivery service includes offering “same day, scheduled on time delivery” to customers. This expansion is a notable development considering that SM Retail acquired a controlling stake in WalterMart in 2013, according to the latest annual report of SM Investment Corp. WalterMart is a prominent supermarket chain in the Philippines, with a network of 82 supermarkets and department stores as of the end of 2022.
