SMC Infrastructure has equipped its toll plazas with advanced artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled license plate recognition (ALPR) cameras, ushering in “barrier-less” tollgates across its expressway network.
According to SMC Chairman and CEO Ramon Ang, the installation of over 522 ALPR cameras across more than 220 kilometers of expressways aims to improve vehicle throughput and reduce congestion. The system works in tandem with Autosweep RFID scanners to streamline toll collection and ensure accurate charges.
“Our ALPR cameras and RFID antennas cross-match motorist information using AI and automation, ensuring accurate toll deductions from Autosweep wallets,” Ang explained.
The barrier-less system is expected to ease traffic at expressway entry points, a concern raised by local government units (LGUs).
“Through pilot-testing, we’ve reduced the need for motorists to fully stop at toll plazas, addressing traffic congestion at entry points along SLEX,” Ang said.
SMC emphasized the importance of collaboration with LGUs and stakeholders, as expressway traffic impacts the broader road network.
While Autosweep remains the primary toll collection system, SMC’s barrier-less infrastructure is fully operational and ready for deployment.
“There are still milestones the government needs to achieve for full implementation, but the barrier-less system is in place and ready for use,” Ang said.
Ang confirmed that all future expressway projects will incorporate ALPR cameras, signaling a long-term commitment to leveraging AI for improved traffic flow and customer experience.
