SMC Power to Plant More Mangroves and Trees

The SMC Power Holdings Corp. (SMCGP) has stated that it plans on expanding its coverage of mangrove and tree planting to areas where facilities of their battery energy storage system (BESS) will be built.

In October, SMC President and CEO, Ramon S. Ang mentioned that their “Project 747” has planted a total of 5,010,116 mangrove and upland trees in over 1,500 hectares of land.

The target of the project is to plant 7 million trees on 4,000 hectares of land in a minimum of seven provinces. As of this writing, the SMCGP has planted in over eight provinces namely, Zambales, Quezon, Pangasinan, Negros Occidental, Davao Occidental, Bulacan, Bataan, and Albay.

The areas in which battery storage facilities of SMCGP will be set up are going to be added to this growing list. These areas for future sites would comprise Tarlac, Pangasinan, Pampanga, Misamis Oriental, Leyte, Laguna, Isabela, Davao de Oro, Davao del Norte, Cebu, Cagayan, Bohol, and Albay.

These battery facilities will lessen power wastage and redirect unused power to remote areas. This redirection is considered the most sustainable and best technical solution to the power reliability and quality problems of this sector. This would also put to use the renewable energy sources of the country such as wind and solar by storing the energy for use during the nighttime or when there are no winds.

“Reforestation is one of the major sustainability priorities of the entire San Miguel Group. While we have had many similar efforts initiated by our various subsidiaries in the past, SMCGP has taken it to another level, planting a record 5 million trees in just under three years, with consistently high survival rates” mentions Ang.
