Several tons of smuggled vegetables from China, seized in Navotas City in August, have tested positive for dangerous contaminants, including lead and E.coli, according to a report by GMA Integrated News. The vegetables lacked the necessary sanitary and phytosanitary import clearance, raising concerns about their safety.
Tests revealed that carrots contained lead levels exceeding the maximum limit, while tomatoes and onions were contaminated with E.coli, suggesting possible contamination from human or animal waste. Further analysis also detected pesticides and heavy metals.
The Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) advised consumers to avoid smuggled produce and thoroughly wash vegetables to minimize health risks.
